What Is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) means shaping your content, your brand details and your online reputation so AI engines quote you. Those engines include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. When they answer a question, you want them to pull your page and name it as a source. You want them to point people to you.
Here is the difference in plain words. SEO wins a ranked link. AEO wins the answer box. GEO wins the quote inside the AI answer. A citation is when an engine names your page as a source. So you do not measure GEO by your position. You measure it by your citation share inside AI answers (Visiby).
This page supports Unity SEO's What Is AEO pillar. AEO and GEO overlap a lot. This page pins down GEO on its own. It focuses on the answer layer — getting quoted and recommended, not just listed.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a link in results | Be cited in an answer box / AI Overview | Be cited, quoted and recommended inside generative AI answers |
| Winning unit | The page | The direct-answer passage | The quotable passage + the entity |
| Success metric | Position + CTR | Citation in AI Overview | Citation share across AI engines |
| Strongest levers | Keywords, links, technical | Direct answers, schema, E-E-A-T | Cited statistics, named-source quotes, clear structure, entity strength |
Think of GEO as its own layer, added on top of SEO. It is not a small part of SEO. A strong SEO base still comes first. The Princeton GEO study found the same thing (see the AEO guide).
How Big Is the GEO Opportunity in 2026?
One independent test in 2026 looked at five AI engines. It found an average 34% citation rate. The gap between engines was wide (GEO Citation Lab 2026):
| AI engine | Citation rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | ~48% | Highest source diversity — 8–12 sources per answer |
| Google AI Overviews | ~35% | |
| ChatGPT | ~32% | Uses Bing's index for retrieval |
| Claude | ~29% | |
| Gemini | ~26% |
Perplexity cites about 2.7x more URLs per answer than Gemini, and 2.1x more than ChatGPT (Machine Relations / Attrifast). More citation slots means more chances to be picked. That is why Perplexity is often the fastest engine to get seen on.
The Key Insight: Every Engine Picks Different Sources
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same question. They do not pick the same sources (Machine Relations). Each engine has its own retrieval index — its own stored list of pages it can read. It also has its own rules for choosing. So if you win on one engine, you are not safe on the others.
There is only one reliable plan that works across platforms. Build the signals every engine likes. That means content that is trustworthy, well structured, easy to quote, and clear about who you are. Do not chase one platform's odd habits. Unity SEO's Citation Triangle and AI Trust Architecture are built to produce exactly these signals.
How to Win GEO Citations
The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) tested nine methods across 10,000 queries. The biggest wins came from statistics, source citations and quotes from experts. See the AEO guide for the full breakdown. Here is how to use that as GEO practice:
- Write quotable passages. The part that gets cited is a short 2–4 sentence passage that answers one question on its own. It is not your whole page. Start every section with one.
- Add cited statistics. Adding statistics was the single biggest lever in the Princeton study (+41% visibility). Swap vague claims for specific numbers you can source.
- Add quotes from named experts. A direct quote from a known, named expert is easier to pull out and easier to trust.
- Strengthen your entity. Your entity is how engines see your brand as one clear thing. Keep your NAP (name, address, phone) the same everywhere. Use Organization/Person schema. A consistent presence across the web helps every engine trust you.
- Stay easy to reach. Do not block the AI crawlers — GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Googlebot. Keep your pages fast and cleanly indexed. See the technical SEO guide. Google has confirmed that AI discovery still depends on crawlable HTML pages. So do not waste time on llms.txt as a way to be found (Search Engine Journal).
- Earn outside approval. "Best-of" lists, trusted directories and editorial mentions all feed the engines' trust signals. They matter most when someone asks for a recommendation.
Measuring GEO Performance
- Test each engine by hand — each month, run your key questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode. Write down where you are cited or recommended.
- Use citation-share tools — Profound, Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and similar tools track brand mentions and share of voice across AI platforms.
- Track by engine, not as one number — because each engine picks different sources, measure each platform on its own. Focus on where you are weakest compared to the chance you have.

Frequently asked questions
What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of structuring content, entity signals and brand presence so generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude and Copilot — cite, quote and recommend you inside their answers. It is measured by citation share in AI answers, not by ranked position.
How is GEO different from AEO and SEO?
SEO competes for a ranked link; AEO targets being cited in an answer box or AI Overview; GEO targets being cited, quoted and recommended inside generative AI answers across multiple engines. GEO sits on top of strong SEO foundations rather than replacing them.
Do all AI engines cite the same sources?
No. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini use different indexes and selection logic and choose different sources for the same query. The reliable strategy is to build the signals every engine rewards — quotable, well-sourced, entity-consistent content — rather than optimising for one platform.
Which AI engine cites the most sources?
Perplexity, by a wide margin — around 48% citation rate in 2026 testing and roughly 2.7x more URLs per answer than Gemini. It is often the quickest engine on which to gain visibility.
